OUR VERDICT

The Samsung Galaxy S9 is a great phone, but one that hasn't really kicked on from the Galaxy S8, bringing a very similar design and screen to 2017's version. The improved biometrics were sorely needed, and the camera is a leap forward, but the amazing low light capabilities have resulted in sacrifices elsewhere. A top, top phone, but the S9 Plus outshines it.

At first glance, the Samsung Galaxy S9 might not look like much of an upgrade – it’s very, very similar in design to the Galaxy S8 from last year.

However, that was an excellent handset, and Samsung has decided to stick with the design this year and put its efforts into making the phone sturdier, faster and more useful day to day.

It’s easily one of the most powerful phones on the market, has novel features in the shape of AR Emoji that are created in your own image, and a camera that’s utterly unlike anything we’ve seen on the market before.

Samsung has also been hard at work fixing the biometric issues that plagued the Galaxy S8, making some subtle tweaks that aren’t apparent until you’ve used the phone for a while and find that it’s just so much easier to unlock securely.

But these plus points are all set against a backdrop of a very high price; we’re not talking iPhone X levels here, but it’s still one of the more expensive options you can buy. 

So if you’re looking to replace a 2016 phone do all the new features really offer enough to make the Galaxy S9 a worthwhile upgrade, or is the cheaper Galaxy S8 still the best phone in the world?

The Samsung Galaxy S9 release date has been set for March 16, with pre-orders having been open for a while around the world.

We know the Galaxy S9 will cost £739, $719.99, or AU$1,199 SIM-free directly from Samsung, but exact pricing for other markets is currently unclear. 

In the UK, that's a huge price jump over last year's handset, which cost £689 at launch, and it's the same price our sources reported before it was made official.

In terms of a UK cost on contract you can expect to pay between £35 and £50 per month for a decent slug of data, although with many contracts you’ll need to pay a little upfront too.

In the US, we're seeing around $30 a month for the contract, and between $720-$800 for the phone itself.

There aren’t any storage variants of this phone though, with only the 64GB option on sale.

Epic Games has dropped a not-so-subtle hint that jetpacks are going to be added to Fortnite shortly, although they’ll probably be very rare.

It hasn’t been officially announced yet, but the latest update for Fortnite gives a pretty unambiguous clue that jetpacks are coming to the game in the near future. The latest update screen details some of the game’s recent additions, but amongst them is a jetpack with the phrase ‘coming soon’ next to it. Just in case you thought this was some kind of vague Blizzard-style clue to an upcoming feature. The accompanying image also has a gold background, which is usually used to denote legendary items and implies that jetpacks won’t be easily available to all.

What isn’t clear though is exactly how powerful the jetpack is going to be or if it’s anything more than just a cosmetic item. Although the description of it allowing you to reach ‘all new heights’ suggests it does actually work. Whether you’ll be flying around like the Rocketeer or just getting a little boost, as if you’ve just landed on a jump pad, is unknown at the moment. The level design in Fortnite is already very vertical, so it does seem as if a jetpack would come in handy. But unless it’s super rare it could end up having a major effect on the game balance.

  There are now three VR headsets available to consumers, but in reality the PS VR the one you’re most likely to buy. It’s a rare case of a product actually living up to the hype, and, although it doesn’t yet have the huge game library it needs, new titles such as Resident Evil 7 are able to bring a really immersive experience to your living room. At £349, it delivers a comprehensive VR experience – and if you’ve got a PS4 or a PS4 Pro it’s certainly worth a look.

PlayStation VR review: What you need

If you own a PS4 and a DualShock 4 controller you're already halfway there. The PSVR simply plugs into the back of the console via the bundled control box, with the only other requirement being a PlayStation Camera. This doesn't come with the headset, but several retailers are selling it as part of a PSVR bundle pack, so you shouldn't have too much trouble tracking one down.
The PS Camera you'll most likely see being sold is the new second-generation version, which now has a cylindrical design and hinge-stand making it easier to align with the headset. The hardware inside it is exactly the same as the previous model, though, so don’t make the mistake of upgrading if you already own one.

 With those three things in place, you're good to go. There's no PC involved, no hassle of having to upgrade any of your rig's components, and you don't need to clear out a significant portion of your living room to use it. Sony still recommends you sit around five feet away from the camera, but given that PSVR is primarily a seated VR experience, at least you won't have to move the furniture around every time you want to start playing.

It's also worth noting that PSVR supports Sony's Move controllers as well. These motion-control wands were originally launched for the PS3 after the runaway success of the Wii, but since then they haven't had much love, as there simply haven't been that many games released that actually support them. However, if you happen to have a couple gathering dust in the back of an old cupboard, now is exactly the right time to bring them out of hibernation, as several PSVR games are using them to great effect.
They're not essential controllers - there are very few games which only support Move controllers - but I'd recommend trying to track some down if you want to get the very best VR experience possible. Most games that do support them, for instance, use them to act as a disembodied pair of hands, allowing you to interact with your environment far more naturally than you would with a DualShock 4 controller.
